GBN film series from the German Cancer Congress 2020

What are the advantages of cooperating with a biobank of the German Biobank Alliance (GBA)? Which research projects and studies are already working successfully with GBA biobanks? Answers are provided by three films that were shot during the German Cancer Congress 2020 and have now been published by the German Biobank Node (GBN). In the first film, Prof. Dr. Esther Herpel, former head of the NCT Heidelberg Tissue Bank, explains why cooperation with a biobank is particularly suitable for clinical trials.

Prof. Dr. Klaus-Peter Janssen (Department of Surgery, Klinikum rechts der Isar, Technical University of Munich) illustrates Esther Herpel's remarks with a "success story" - a successful research project that was carried out using biosamples and associated data from a GBA biobank. The "Cancer Genome Atlas" forms a "map" of the complex changes in cancer cells. With high-quality biosamples from patients suffering from pancreatic cancer, Janssen and his colleagues Prof. Karl-Friedrich Becker and PD Dr Julia Slotta-Huspenina (both from the Institute of Pathology) ensured that high-quality genome and proteome analyses could be carried out even when the cancer cell count was low.

Dr. Daniel Brucker (Interdisciplinary biomaterial and database Frankfurt, IBDF) reports on another success story: an innovative treatment method using genetically modified natural killer cells against malignant brain tumours (glioblastomas). The IBDF is responsible for the logistics, storage and preparation of the samples for the clinical trial.

These and other "success stories" as well as general information for biobank users can be found on the GBN website in the "Research" section.
